Challenging Times

Nationwide unemployment is around 10%. That does not include those who have in effect given up and stopped searching. Which makes finding a good job, the right job for you, all the more difficult. For every job that opens up, there are potentially dozens, if not hundreds, of applicants. It's tough to compete in such an environment.

So, what to do? Let's start with a few things
NOT to do:

  1. Do not flood the market with your resume. Sending your resume indiscriminately invariably will fill up the waste baskets, unread. And waste your money.
  2. Do not assume that your "generic" resume will suffice, no matter how well written. Your resume must address the employer's expectations and requirements. This implies that each resume has to be unique and targeted.
  3. In this market, do not expect a positive response if you lack key attributes for this position. There are candidates that meet all the requirements and more. On the other hand, there are ways to deal with that. Stay tuned.
  4. Do not spend just a couple of hours a week on your pursuit. Your job search right now IS your job. You must focus your entire work week on job search-related activities. Whether networking, fine-tuning your resume, enhancing your interviewing skills, overcoming barriers, studying, enhancing your skills, you MUST do it, just as you would if you had a job. This is a project you must manage well!
  5. Do not bypass free advice!
